Farewell to Marie
Farewell to Marie 624 467 Greenhithe Community Trust

The lovely Marie Bishop is retiring at aged 84 from her Neighbourhood Support role in Greenhithe. She has been in the role for over 7 years and has been a wonderful asset to our community. She has done an amazing job running weekly International Friends and our Neighbourhood Support database and regular newsletter. Also Mainly Music and plenty of other things. We had a lovely party for her where she launched her book about her life story mid-year.

Greenhithe Community Trust has engaged Suzanne Piper about 10 hours each week to take on the Neighborhood Support role. We are all enjoying getting to know her. She and Marie have overlapped their roles for a few weeks.

Meanwhile our beloved Marie is still local so it’s not a full goodbye, just a morphing as she steps back.

It was so very sad that a tradesman lost his life on a Tauhinu Road building site this month by electrocution. Please be very careful of over head wires. Thank you Greenhithe Volunteer Fire Brigade for being there to help out.

New MP for Greenhithe
New MP for Greenhithe 1024 534 Greenhithe Community Trust

Congratulations to National’s Cameron Brewer, our new Upper Harbour Member of Parliament. And commiserations to outgoing Labour’s Vanushi Walters who served our electorate well the past 3 years.

Cameron Brewer is currently a self-employed communications consultant. He served as an Auckland Councillor for two terms from 2010 to 2016 and on the Rodney Local Board from 2016 to 2019.

Before being elected to Auckland Council, Cameron was the chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association for over five years, where he advocated strongly for local businesses, and led projects to revitalise Newmarket’s town centre and improve security for retailers.

Born in Hawera, Cameron has a Bachelor of Arts from Massey University, Palmerston North.

Dubbed New Zealand’s youngest publisher at the time, Cameron established and ran a community newspaper in the 1990s called Inside Otago, before selling it to a business investor. He then worked as a press secretary in the National Party’s parliamentary research unit and Leader’s Office.

Cameron has lived in Auckland’s northwest for seven years. On the Rodney Local Board, he was chair of the Transport, Infrastructure and Environment Committee.

During his six years as an Auckland Councillor, Cameron was the chair of the Council’s Business Advisory Forum and Chair of the Planning and Urban Design Panel. He also served as deputy chair of the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Reserves Board.

Cameron has a daughter and two sons.

It is great to see everyone working on clean-up efforts, while others will look forward to getting out and about around Tāmaki Makaurau. Whatever you are doing, we have some advice for you and anyone who visits Auckland.

Check Safeswim

All beaches in Auckland are black-pinned due to waste contamination and debris so please remain out of the water and exercise caution if you are near a beach this weekend. There may be hazards in and around the water that may pose a risk. A good idea is to check www.Safeswim.org.nz for all your up-to-date information.

Parks and Recreation

All Aucklanders are encouraged to exercise caution when visiting local parks and sports fields, as they have been affected by the flood. For your safety, Aucklanders should not play in floodwaters as this water could be contaminated.

Travel across Auckland

Travel with care, as many roads remain closed and disruptions to public transport services continue.

People are advised to allow extra time for travel and check https://at.govt.nz/weatherwatch to see how their journey might be impacted.

Storm clean-up

15 different sites will be open to accepting any of your storm-related debris. Check this website to find the closest to you: https://www.makethemostofwaste.co.nz/…/auckland-waste…

A new magazine for Greenhithe!
A new magazine for Greenhithe! 1024 683 Greenhithe Community Trust

Good news – thanks to the popularity of our emailed Neighbourhood Support newsletter and the absence of a printed local magazine the past few years, Greenhithe Community Trust has decided to launch Greenhithe’s very own boutique magazine. Hooray! It is  called Greenhithe Life. This not-for-profit adventure is designed to benefit Greenhithe Community – you!

The first edition of Greenhithe Life came out in October and was well received. 1500 magazine’s were dropped off at key locations around wider Greenhithe – the dairy, Collins Cafe, Greenhithe Primary, Upper Harbour Primary and the Highway Convenience Store. It will be produced every two months and will generally feature interesting stories about locals and events that have happened. You can view it here –

Plus the regular emailed Neighbourhood Support newsletter has been rebranded to be complimentary and is now called Greenhithe E Life. It will be produced on alternate months to the magazine and will generally feature articles and events coming up.

So if you have stories of interest or want to promote community events or regular groups, please contact our Greenhithe Life Facilitator Shelly at ghithelife@gmail.com

If you would like to place an advert about your local business, please also contact Shelly. We cant do this magazine without our local businesses buying advertising. And thank you Greenhithe for supporting local businesses!

Recent Planting Success
Recent Planting Success 1024 683 Greenhithe Community Trust

Kia ora koutou

Planting season has begun!  Over 1300 native plants have already been planted in reserves around Greenhithe, with more being planted each week.  Planting native plants helps improve the biodiversity, benefitting our native wildlife, and mitigate against the impacts of climate change.  Join one of our regular volunteer groups this winter to join in with the planting fun!  By the end of the planting season nearly 4000 native plants would have been planted around our reserves in Greenhithe.

A special thanks to Michelle & Grant Beach from Barfoot & Thompson Greenhithe who have been keeping our volunteers well fed by sponsoring a sausage sizzle at our planting events.

During May we also undertook some monitoring – putting out chewcards to see what pest animals are around, and we also undertook some 5 minute bird counts in a number of reserves.  Monitoring is important as it helps to show us how the work we are doing is influencing native wildlife (we hope to see increased numbers and species of native birds across our reserves), and how our pest animal control methods are tracking (are rat/possum numbers low or high).

We’ve recently changed our email addresses.  You can now contact Nicola on gctnicola@gmail.com and Louis on gctlouis@gmail.com.

Neighbour Support
Neighbour Support 1024 1024 Greenhithe Community Trust

Hi Greenhithe I’m Suzanne and I am engaged by the Greenhithe Community Trust to boost Neighbourhood Support here.

We facilitate our wonderful Street Contacts. They pass on information to their street and encourage occasional street gatherings to discuss street issues especially security. 70 parts of streets have Street Contacts here but more are needed.

We also facilitate International Friends for newcomers every Tuesday mornings at No.12 Greenhithe Road.

Together we work towards a vibrant caring community. It’s a great way to meet people and it’s fun too!

If you are interested in being a Street Contact or have some great ideas about neighbourliness , you can contact me at gctsuzanne@gmail.com

We are grateful to Neighbourhood Support NZ and COGS for generous grants toward Neighbourhood Support Facilitator hours.

Why do we have these groups?

-To strengthen community spirit
-To provide a means for residents to meet and develop a caring and secure environment for everyone
-To prevent the occurrence of crime in the neighbourhood
– To provide a common voice on dealing with local issues such as rubbish, traffic problems, graffiti, street lighting etc.
– To better deal with and survive civil emergencies

How does it work? – It’s all about being a great neighbour!

-Welcoming new neighbours as they move in and inviting them to join the group
– Responding to and reporting suspicious behaviour to the Police first and also to each other
– Employing sensible security habits
– Looking out for each other
– Being prepared for civil emergencies
– Making a special effort to include those who may feel isolated eg new kiwis with English as a second language or the elderly

What is involved?

You will be glad to know it is not about endless meetings or setting up committees! It is very informal, casual and fun. Someone in your street volunteers to be Street Contact and collects everyone’s details to make a street directory and then registers the group. After that do what works best for your street to encourage everyone to keep connected and be a great neighbour.

An annual Know Your Street BBQ is a great idea. Pick up a free $50 supermarket voucher from me between September and March each year to supply your event, invite the neighbours and have fun!

If you are interested in joining please contact Suzanne by email at gctsuzanne@gmail.com
